Maunga Kakaramea

Maunga Kakaramea marks the northernmost boundary of the tribal area of Ngati Tahu-Ngati Whaoa. Although the Mountain was known as a place of battle it was also a place of refuge and a kainga (or home base) for many within the tribe.

The kohatu on the right has our story carved into it and was made from rock quarried from the base of the maunga. Storyboards have also been installed along the walking trail to inform visitors why the maunga is such a taonga to our iwi.

Te Tihi o Ruru Enhancement

In 2017 we partnered with Timberlands and DOC to enhance the summit of the Maunga. This included the installation of some hard landscaping, planting some native shrubs and telling our story in art form, culminating in the installation of two pou whenua, ably carved by one of our own people, to mark our nothernmost boundary. These photos depict some of the work done as well as the unveilling of our pou, who represent our tupuna ariki Tahu Matua and our other tupuna Whaoa.
